50th Anniversary of the Korean War

Tallahassee
WHEREAS,
beginning on June 25, 1950, Communist North Korea invaded South Korea,
initiating the Korean War; and
WHEREAS,
on June 27, 1950,
President Harry Truman ordered military intervention in Korea; and
WHEREAS, the
state of Florida is home to approximately 1.7 million veterans of military
service in the Armed Forces of the United States; and
WHEREAS,
an estimated 310,800 current residents of the state of Florida participated
in this military campaign; and
WHEREAS,
at least 583 Florida residents, whose names are inscribed on Florida’s
Korean War Veterans’ Memorial, are known to have died as a direct result
of wounds, injuries, and illnesses which arose in this hostile environment;
and
WHEREAS,
the U.S. Congress, in 1999, declared that what was previously referred to as
the ‘Korean Conflict’ will now officially be known as the ‘Korean
War’; and
WHEREAS,
the State of Florida does recognize the 50th anniversary of this
war and the service and sacrifice made by all those who participated in what
became known as the Korean War; and
WHEREAS,
in remembrance of Florida’s brave sons and daughters, the flag of the
United States will be flown at half mast over the Capitol on June 25, 2000;
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, Jeb Bush, by
virtue of the authority vested in me as Governor of the state of Florida, do
hereby proclaim June 2000, in memoriam, as
