Suicide Prevention Week Announced
TALLAHASSEE – Governor Charlie Crist signed a proclamation Aug. 29 recognizing Sept. 9-15 as National Suicide Prevention Week. The proclamation helps raise awareness of the warning signs of depression and suicidal tendencies, and encourages increased parental influence, education and treatment as ways to prevent it.
To ensure Florida’s veterans with emotional crises have round-the-clock access to trained professionals, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has recently established a national suicide prevention hot line for veterans.
The toll-free hot line number is 1-800-273-8255. VA’s hot line is be staffed by mental health professionals who take calls from across the country and work closely with local VA mental health providers to help callers. To operate the national hot line, VA is partnering with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
