The U.S. Navy took over MacArthur Field for use as an auxiliary field to NAS Vero Beach and for night fighter training. The site was renamed NAAS Witham in honor of the first Naval Aviator from Stuart to be killed during the war, Paul “Homer” Witham.
The facility Returned to civilian use by Martin County in 1947 as Witham Field Airport, few buildings remain from the World War II period.
